ABSTRACT

The refurbishment opportunities provided by climate policies require an adequate knowledge of the school building stock, characterised by an urgent need of maintenance. Nevertheless, empirical evidence on energy performance of school samples appears limited due to the difficulty in retrieving data, although field data analysis is crucial in the built environment management. This study aims to explore existing energy conditions of an educational building sample hosting pre-schools, primary and lower secondary schools, located in southern Italy (Apulia Region). Firstly, an overview of the schools based on data retrieved from the regional dataset was performed. Then, more than 1000 buildings were clustered based on two predictors (construction year and surface-to-volume ratio), identifying five clusters representing the majority Apulian schools. In addition, billed gas and electricity data collected for 47 schools over a five-year period (2017-2021) were analysed, identifying annual and monthly trends, benchmarks, and mean values, which account for 46.5 (gas consumption), 15.59 kWh/m2 (electricity consumption). On average, source total consumption in 2020 experienced a reduction of 20%, partly due to Covid-19 restrictive measures. Finally, factors affecting heating consumptions were explored, and a regression analysis was performed, identifying heating degree days, construction year and boiler power to be the most significant.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 Pandemic (C19P) situation of the entire world now affects all fields in terms of Excellencies and let to suffer drastically from normal functioning. The whole world is now concentrating on the protection from the C19 virus in the form of vaccination (C19V) and social distancing (SD). There is a kind enough need arises to maintain the hygiene environment during and after the post C19P situations, and this IoT e-Environment Pollution Monitoring and Controlling System (IEE-PMCS) with 3 parameters (air, water, sound) resolves and addresses the issues in the hygiene maintenance of various environments as common. In the IEE-PMCS proposed work, the 3 measuring parameters and their real-time and current values are percept with the appropriate sensors of IoT elements, and the data are collected and stored on a cloud and are verified with the predefined threshold values of pollution measures with included tolerance values of permissible values to indicate if there is any cause of the pollution on the real-time perceptions. The verification and decision-making of the system is reliable on the new algorithms proposed in this work. This work is based on system modeling and providing an efficient architecture to the maximum extent of the intended purpose, with a detailed description of the flow of operations and with the algorithmic level. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Duvall Systems is a government information technology and cybersecurity consulting firm focused on providing high-Tech consulting support for U.S. federal government agencies. Duvall has experienced a series of discrimination complaints from Asian-American employees related to workplace mistreatment. These complaints relate to a hostile work environment, discrimination in promotions, and employee evaluations. Many of the complaints have been driven by racist attacks against Asian-American employees blaming them for COVID-19. The focus of the study is an exploration of diversity and inclusion in a cybersecurity consulting company. An action research approach used included fact-finding interviews, barrier analysis, company policy assessments, content analysis of the problem in the literature, and recommendations based on the amalgamation of the triangulated data. © 2022 Information Resources Management Association. ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to investigate managers' experiences of managing work environment and risks during the Covid-19 pandemic and to explore how managers might use these experiences to develop future risk management. Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 18 Swedish managers at different hierarchical levels working in 11 different organizations. A directed content analysis was carried out, informed by theory on risk management. Finding(s): The results point to the pandemic as a societal crisis which workplaces needed to manage through large means of improvisation. Regular work environment routines were put to the test, and several deficiencies in the work environment and risk management were identified. Organizations that handle occupational safety and risks on a daily basis through established routines were less affected and could easier adjust work environment and risk management, compared to organizations prioritizing the social and organizational work environment, which had to re-prioritize and start paying more attention to the physical work environment and to bring risk management into their daily routines. Originality/value: The study offers an account of how managers in different labor market sectors in Sweden have acted in the midst of the pandemic by handling real-time crises, how these experiences can be used for engaging in retrospective learning and how this may imply changes to their prospective risk management. ABSTRACT

Through a dynamic business environment, innovations are frequently transforming into a crucial determinant in improving and creating competitive advantage and the survival of an enterprise on the market. In times of pandemic, this trend is becoming increasingly apparent as various enterprises, especially SMEs, have been forced to modify the business model to survive. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on the strategic management of innovation in SMEs in Poland and the Czech Republic, as two regions similar economically and historically. Through research in SMEs in both countries, the evaluation of the rate of change caused by a pandemic and the main problems in innovative business management were identified. ABSTRACT

The European Commission has adopted the European Green Deal strategy, which aims to achieve climate neutrality in the EU by 2050. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to shift the economy toward the use of green and renewable energy. Critical raw materials (CRMs), Li, Co, REE, Te, Sc and others, are used in renewable energy sources (RES) production. The EU lacks its own CRM deposits, and additionally, the access to already identified deposits is limited, which is making the EU countries search for alternative CRM sources. One such source of CRMs may be mining waste generated on the Indonesian island of Bangka as a result of processing cassiterite-bearing sands. Studies of the mineral composition of the waste using the XRD method reveal rich contents of xenotime (0.79–17.55 wt%), monazite (1.55–21.23 wt%), zircon (1.87–64.35 wt%) and other minerals, carriers of valuable metals, such as Sn, Ti, Nb, Ta. The point mineral chemistry analyses were performed using EPMA. Xenotime is the main carrier of heavy rare earth elements (HREE), especially the “most critical” HREEs: Gd2O3 (1.42–7.16 wt%), Dy2O3 (2.28–11.21 wt%), Er2O3 (2.44–7.85 wt%), and Yb2O3 (1.71–7.10 wt%). Xenotime is characterized by a complex internal structure resulting from metasomatic processes occurring during their formation. In SEM-BSE imaging, they show zonation of internal structure, which is the effect of an HREE, Y, Si and U substitution in the crystal structure. On the other hand, thorite ThSiO4 and uranothorite (Th,U)SiO4 inclusions are present in xenotimes. The ICP-MS/ES studies of tailings reveal very high contents of HREE + Y (up to 7.58 wt%), U (up to 0.11), Th (up to 0.75 wt%) and Sc (132 ppm). A CRM source diversification is part of the strategy to ensure the security of raw materials for countries of the European Union and the green transformation of the continent. Bilateral EU–Indonesia cooperation in the geological exploration and development of primary and secondary sources may contribute to an increase in the supply of HREEs to the global market.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to propose a hybrid multi criteria decision making model with a linear programming (LP) model to tackle the issue of safe disposal of hazardous and infectious healthcare waste. For this, ten criteria in this study have been identified from literature and field surveys which are modelled using Decision making trial and evaluation (DEMATEL) and Analytic network process (ANP) methods to select the best disposal firm i.e. single sourcing for a hospital. We found that Experience of the firm, Technology for disposal, and Waste collection infrastructure acts as the most vital criteria in selecting a healthcare waste disposal firm for single sourcing. Furthermore, to optimize the total value of disposal and mitigating the risk involved in disposing waste through single sourcing; the LP model considering constraints such as waste lose constraint and waste processing constraint etc. Is solved for multiple sourcing using Lingo 18.0. The solution to LP results into allocation of 500, 500, and 1000 (kg/day) disposables to healthcare waste disposal firms D1, D2 and D3, respectively. The multi-method approach proposed in this study helps the hospital management in selecting economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable healthcare waste disposal firm.
